Next in line

Objective: Students use 100’s chart to predict next numeral in line.

Materials: 100’s chart, chart paper

Manipulative Activity:

  1. Post 100’s chart
  2. Attach chart paper below the first row of numbers
  3. Explain to the children or have them describe how or what each row of numerals have in common
  4. They will note that each column of numbers has the same number as the top number
  5. For example 1, 11, 21, 31, 41, etc
  6. Attach chart paper below the first row of numbers. Ask students to tell the next number in the row.
  7. Skip rows as for the number
  8. Students will be able to see a number pattern. Each two digit number in the row has the same number on the right.
  9. Use chart paper to display one row at a time

Technology Activity: Students will use the applet, Attribute Blocks, from the National Library of Virtual Mathematics Manipulatives. Depending on the availability of computers for your students, this activity could be done individually, with partners, in groups, or as a class.

Paper/Pencil Activity: Depending on the level of your students, you can have them complete this activity individually or with assistance. Here is a possibility:

  • Give each child 100’s chart. Have the children colour the numbers in the row that have the same number as the top number.
