Objective: Students describe and extend patterns with the attribute blocks.

Materials: attribute blocks

Manipulative Activity: Use overhead to display two shapes. Ask a student to describe what comes next. Have students display the shape on the overhead. Continue extending the pattern.

Technology Activity: Students will use the applet, Attribute Blocks, from the National Library of Virtual Mathematics Manipulatives. Depending on the availability of computers for your students, this activity could be done individually, with partners, in groups, or as a class.

Have students go to Making a Pattern

Paper/Pencil Activity: Depending on the level of your students, you can have them complete this activity individually or with assistance. Here are some possibilities:

  • Have students describe and extend patterns with attribute blocks.
  • Have students trace and colour their patterns.

Extension: Given a sequence of numerals, students write what comes next. Students demonstrate the pattern by using body movements.
