Multiplication and division structures
 

Description

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Understand multiplication as repeated addition
  • Understand division as grouping (repeated subtraction)
  • Use vocabulary associated with multiplication and division
  • Develop further their understanding of multiplication and division and the inverse relationship between them
  • Understand why the commutative law applies to multiplication;
  • Choose and use multiplication or division to solve problems in ‘real life’, money or measures of lengths, mass, capacity or time

  • Two different structures of real-life problems modelled by multiplication
  • The contexts in which pupils will meet these multiplication structures
  • The commutative law of multiplication
  • The idea of a rectangular array associated with multiplication
  • Three different structures of real-life problems modelled by division
