Classifying shapes

What pupils should be taught

  • How to visualise and describe two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) shapes and the way they behave, making precise use of geometrical language, especially that of triangles, quadrilaterals, and prisms and pyramids of various kinds
  • How to make and draw with increasing accuracy 2-D and 3-D shapes and patterns; recognise the geometrical features of 2-D and 3-D shapes, including angles, faces, pairs of parallel lines and symmetry, and use these to classify shapes; visualise 3-D shapes from 2-D drawings
