Looking at addition

The operation of addition

What are the different kinds of situation that primary pupils might encounter to which the operation of addition applies?

We will focus  on understanding the mathematical structures of these operations.

We will look at modelling – setting up the mathematical model pertaining to a given situation. There are two basic categories of real life problems that are modelled by the mathematical operation that we call addition. The problems in each of these categories may vary in terms of their content and context, but essentially they all have the same structure. We could call one the aggregation structure and the other the augmentation structure. It may not always be easy or necessary to distinguish between both.
